India’s Badass Skater Girls Take Centre Stage In A UK Band’s New Music Video

If you’ve been paying attention it will come as no surprise to know that India has one of the fastest growing skater communities in the world and at the head of that march is the Girl Skate India and the Holystoked Skate Crew. When director Sasha Rainbow heard the song ‘Alpha Female’ from the British band Wild Beasts’ new album, these trailblazing girls were all she could think of, and became her inspiration for a video of epic proportions.

The shoot took place in Bangalore and featured India’s first professional female skater, Atita Verghese as well as girls from the different skate crews in the city. India has a unique space for the sport, skating was never solidified as a male sport in the country and has since become a symbol of female empowerment and Sasha wanted to capture this feeling on film. As she told Dazed “Because of the current political climate in the west and attitudes of intolerance and sexism across the world, I wanted to create a video that celebrates everyone who takes the risk to be themselves.”

The video salutes these girls in their essence, it proves that there is no ‘normal’ and whatever way a woman chooses to live, she can own it, they push past the stereotypes and the omnipresent male gaze to be truly free. As Wild Beasts’ singer Hayden Thorpe described it, “The women in ‘Alpha Female’ appear to have found a sublime vehicle for slicing through time more quickly. They are in a hurry, speeding time up, pulling their generation along.”
